Zombies!!!!

May be a weird topic, but why are ZOMBIES everywhere in pop culture? Not talking because of Halloween, I even have a friend who is one of the most "normal" people I know swears that some day we are going to have a zombie apocolypse:-/

Then I was thinking about the recent episode of AA about diseases.. What if aliens turned us into Zombies after an experiment gone wrOng????? Makes me think... You can even go to Ehow.com and will give you instructions on dealing with them and recently it was added to the government survival manual??? Seriously Zombies ZOMBIES???

On CNN this morning they were talking about a new special airing tonight on mermaids...Charlie Foley, who created the buzzworthy documentary "Mermaids: The Body Found" is the guest they were talking to.

Zombies are actually dead people who are controlled by a necromancer or through voodoo. The dead cannot walk by themselves and need those supernatural sources in order to do so.

Only pop culture has them needing to eat brains and the like, but true zombies just do the bidding of the necromancer behind them.

The only blood drinking vampire bats I have heard of come from South America. The ones shown in the movies are fruit bats which do not even eat insects. The fruit bats are huge and scarier looking, but the tiny ones are the true carnivores.

Still, changing to a bat always looked cool from the moment Bela Lugosi did so in Dracula.

I've often wondered where the stories of such creatures of the night came from? Was is just someone with a particularly vivid imagination (or something they were smoking?) who went around telling tall tales for the entertainment of the masses...? Or did these beings exist in some shape or form?

I'm hoping it was just some really bad acid they were tripping on!!!

I'll take the vampires of True Blood over zombies any day! Pam is my favorite vampire on that show and would take care of any zombie army.

Zombies are basically from voodoo and other traditions where a necromancer uses them to do his or her bidding. They have been around for a long, long time and the zombie movies from the 1930s are truer to what they really are than the stuff out today.

In his book, The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie, 1988, the author Wade Davis claims that liviing people are turned into zombies by Haitian Voodoo practitioners administering two powders, Tetrodotoxin and a neurotoxin from the Puffer fish. These put the victim into a state of suspended animation which is assumed to be death and the victims are then buried by their families.
Later the voodoo practitioner, called a Vodoun, exhumes the victim at midnight and revives them. At this point they have suffered brain damage and have little will of their own and are easily hypnotised and will obey the commands of the Vodoun. Wade claimed that they could be kept in this conditon for years until they eventually died of the poisons. When the friends and families of the victims see them walking around, they believe them to be living dead animated by the power of the Vodoun, fear then gives the Vodoun great power over the locals.
Doing this to living people strikes me as more horrible than Hollywood Zombie movies which we know are just fantasy.
