Gold could have been needed for countless reasons. If they come to earth for gold then it may have been any of these fundamentals, repair, energy, for our star(sun) for whatever reason, or to study earth itself. If they needed gold so bad it can be found within supernovas, however they may have to wait for it to explode then they would have to gather it all up, and throughout an area larger than our solar system. Or maybe they can go within the dying star to extract it.. It may be easier to mine from a planet than a supernova.
Reactions in a supernova have neutron-rich nuclei, I don't know what happens when nuclear reactions in supernova explosions move beyond the table of isotopes. Many exotic atoms are formed that do not exist on Earth and which quickly transform into stable elements. There could be other elements they use we have never seen. Since we have no data on these exotic nuclei, the astrophysicists have to make many assumptions about their properties so with the information we have today I wonder if The Ancient Extraterrestrials needed heavier elements as well, like uranium. But why here? They must have been just passing through collecting elements they need along the way sense they are so abundant throughout the universe. We just happen to be closer. I'm trying to figure this one out, so if elements heavier than iron cannot form in stellar nucleosynthesis such as our sun, (because more energy is required to fuse heavier elements together to create the really heavy elements than is released in that kind of fusion) that would make more sense as to why they came to earth to mine. But not just for that reason alone, it was Also their interest in human activity as well, not just to mine the solar system and go. For some reason they wanted to help push us along our species. I’m sure they know that Iron is what kills a star so maybe they were here to monitor our sun as well knowing it is our life support.
